Government is providing up to £60 million to help bus operators to cap single adult fares at £2 per journey.
Residents across Bedford Borough are set to benefit from a £60 million cash injection into bus services across the UK.
The £60 million Government initiative will back up a new £2 cap on single bus journeys from January to March 2023.
The move will help bus users with travel costs for work, education, shopping and medical treatments over the winter months while they are facing pressures from the rising cost of living.
Bedford Borough’s rural communities are set to see some of the biggest benefits as they are usually subjected to expensive bus fares sometimes as high as £6 for single journeys.
Conservative Councillor, Martin Towler commented, “These more affordable fares will enable residents to get to work, school, or simply to visit and get around Bedford Borough.
As we see price increase elsewhere it is important we maintain an affordable transport network so residents can still go about their daily business, the £2 fare does just that.”
This funding continues to build on the Government’s £130 million distributed last month to protect vital bus routes and services across the country.
During such a difficult economic period we are doing everything we can to help the residents of Bedford Borough.
